The main purpose in todays strength work is reinforcing and developing that straight arm strength we here so much about. In gymnastics its basically the key way to all our movements, however anywhere else it seems to just mean "locked out elbows". Except this isn't the case, were not just simply stacking the joint and balancing etc. When we refer to straight arm strength were referring to our ability to recruit tension through multiple ranges of motion of the joint, mainly through stability of the connective tissues, i.e ligaments, tendons etc. This is something rarely "trained" outside of gymnastics, and is usually just afterthought of contractile movement.
